Battle Town Council
The objective of the Mayor's Charity is to use the office of Mayor to bring together the Council and the community in support of local causes. Each year the presiding Mayor will nominate a charity, or charities, and will work to organise events and raise money for them.
As the founding Mayor, Cllr Margaret Kiloh had chosen two registered charities with local connections to support during her term as Mayor; Home Start East Sussex who work with families and children under 5 who are in need of support and TVS, a local educational charity based in Battle which works with schools in deprived rural communities in South Africa..
Since becoming Mayor in 2016, Councillor Furness has been working with three local schools in Battle to form strong twin links with schools in Sierra Leone to promote mutual, long term benefits.
The Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link (HSLFL) connects the peoples of Hastings, UK and Hastings Sierra Leone to promote reconstruction and friendship. It raises money through events and donations to help rebuild Hastings. Sierra Leone following it's devastation in 1997 during the country's Rebel War. The Link also promotes official twinning, informal exchanges and school-to-school links.
The schools in Sierra Leone vary in size and number of classes. The smaller primary schools may have 200-800 students. The secondary schools have over 1000 students. Class sizes vary to, some can be very large with numbers up to 120 children in one classroom.
